OTTAWA (CP) - The federal Health Department is advising users of acetaminopnen, found in medicines such as Tylenol, Neo-Citran and Sinutab, not to exceed recommended doses because of a risk of liver damage or death.
"A recently published article identified acetaminophen overdose as the No. 1 cause of acute liver failure in the United States, and most of these overdoses were unintentional," Health Canada said Thursday in a statement.
"Acetaminophen is safe when used as directed," it added.
The advisory cautions people to read labels on pain and cold medications before taking them.
For example, it says, parents may give children one medication for the flu and another to treat a runny nose and both products may contain acetaminophen. Taking them together could result in an overdose.
