They don't get the hot flashes of menopause, but new research shows men may also have a ticking biological clock as their fertility decreases with age.

The California-based study showed that while men produce sperm throughout their lives -- unlike women who are born with a finite number of eggs -- its ability to move and fertilize an egg decreases steadily over time.

University of California's Dr. Brenda Eskenazi and Dr. Andrew Wyrobek of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory in California, published their findings in the journal Human Reproduction.

The study provides a new slant on male fertility, said a Calgary expert, though Prof. Frans van der Hoorn said it can't be confused with menopause, a drastic drop in hormones and fertility.

"It was always believed that men would be fertile until a very high age -- probably because there are examples of people fathering children in their 80s," said van der Hoorn.

The California study showed sperm motility dropped by 0.7% each year between 22 and 80.
